Celestron 52250 80mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope

The Ultima 80 features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. Including the eyepiece the Ultima 80 measures just over 18 inches long and weighs about 3.6 pounds. The rubber eyecup can be removed to expose a standard “T-thread” for attaching a camera. I like the 45* angled eyepiece because I can use a shorter tripod to support the spotting scope while viewing or while taking pictures with a small camera attached to the eyepiece.

The focus ranges from 27 feet to the horizon with just a few turns of the focus knob. When I fold down the rubber eye cup I can keep my glasses on and see the whole 2 degree field of view at 20X magnification. With my glasses on I need very little focus adjustment while I crank the zoom eyepiece from 20X up to 60X. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Ultima 80 gives me a sharp image either way.

The drawback of the tradition crown and flint achromatic lens used in the Ultima 80 Zoom Spotting Scope is a bit of false color, also known as blue fringing or chromatic aberration. Blue fringing seems well controlled at 20X magnification, but it becomes increasingly noticeable as I zoom up to 60X. Celestron also offers the Ultima 80ED and the Regal 80 F-ED spotting scopes which use exotic ED glass lenses to virtually eliminate blue fringing and produce the sharpest possible high power views.

Tips for Using Exposure Compensation to Over- or Underexpose By Ben Long

These days, almost all cameras have an Exposure Compensation control, which simply lets you make a relative exposure change. That is, you can tell the camera, "I don't care how you metered the scene; I just want you to go up from there by one stop." Try using exposure compensation now: 1. Frame a shot. 2. Press the shutter button down halfway to meter your scene (the camera will also autofocus and take a white balance reading). 3. After the camera beeps, the viewfinder and status LCD will show you the shutter speed and aperture settings that it has calculated. 4. Take the shot. 5. Now frame the same shot, and again press the shutter button halfway down to meter the scene. 6. Using your thumb, press the Exposure Compensation button on the back of the camera. Dial in a specific amount of over- or underexposure.

7. Rotate the Main dial until the Exposure Compensation display in the view- finder indicates a one-stop overexposure. (If you haven't changed the camera's defaults, then this will be three clicks on the dial.) 8. Take the shot. The Exposure Compensation display highlights. Turn the Main dial to increase (brighten) or decrease (darken) the setting.

Food For Thought: What's Wrong With Over- or Underexposing? Of course, once you start tinkering with the camera's carefully concocted exposure settings, you run the risk of over- or underexposing your scene to the point where bright things blow out to complete white or where dark shadows fall to complete black. When an area in your image goes to all white or all black, it becomes an area with no detail. Detail in a photo is constructed from contrasting tones, and when part of an image is one color, it looks like a flat surface. In the case of shadows, this isn't so bad. A black shadow simply looks like an area that's too dark to see. Unless there's some detail in the shadowy area that you really want to keep visible, letting a shadow darken is not too terrible. Overexposed highlights, though, are almost always distracting. An area of complete white acts like a magnet for the viewer's eye and can sometimes upstage your subject. However, at times it's worth overexposing a highlight to get better tonality on your subject. Also, a little bit of overexposed bright spots—small bits of chrome on a car, for example—won't necessarily be noticeable. While there are no hard and fast rules about how much over- or underexposure is too much (and many times, overexposing an image can be an effective stylistic choice), it's important to understand the risk and make an intelligent decision. Now go into playback mode and look at the two images. The second one should be much brighter than the first one. This is the image that was over exposed. Note that you didn't tell the camera a specific shutter speed or aperture. Instead, you simply told it to go up one stop from whatever it thought was the correct exposure. The T1i has an exposure compensation range of -2 stops to +2 stops. By default, the control moves in 1/3-stop increments. When you use exposure compensation, you don't actually know exactly how the camera will achieve its over- or underexposure, but the camera does follow a predictable method. It will always try to achieve its change in a way that doesn't involve a shutter speed that might be too slow for handheld use. Remember, a slower shutter speed means that the shutter is open longer, which means that your images are more susceptible to the blurring and softening caused by shakiness in your hand. If you have the ISO set to Auto, the T1i will often effect the change by altering the ISO setting, but it will never do this to the point of introducing noise into your image. Because there's no visible difference between ISO 100 and 400, the T1i has two stops of ISO latitude to play with, meaning it will often keep the shutter speed and aperture the same as you change exposure compensation.

With an array of great new features, it can take awhile to discover some of the shortcuts to using the Canon EOS 7D. Here are some tips and some of the accessories that I use with the 7D. Save time by setting up AF point orientation so that the 7D automatically switches to the AF point you most often use in horizontal and both vertical (grip at the top and grip at the bottom) shooting orientations. The 7D also remembers the AF-Area selection mode that you’ve selected for each position. Need to ensure a level horizon? Press the INFO. button until the electronic level appears in the viewfinder to help you align the line of the horizon. This is a great tool to use with Tilt & Shift lenses because it also shows pitch and roll to help square up vertical lines. If you haven’t gotten the hang of pressing the new M-Fn button to change the Area selection mode for focusing, then press the Q button to display the Quick Control Screen. Tilt the Multi-controller to highlight the Area selection mode item (third row, left-most item), and then turn the Quick Control dial to change the mode. As a portrait photographer, one of my first moves was to enable the Spot AF Area selection for ultra-precise focusing on the subject’s eye. Spot AF isn’t one of the default Area selection modes, but you can add it by using Custom Function III-6. And to use Spot AF, you have to manually select the AF point. Entering your personal copyright information is easy. Just go to the Set-up 3 menu, select Copyright information, and then select Enter copyright details to add your information. For a series of High-Dynamic Range (HDR) images, try combining the 5 stops of exposure compensation with 3 stops of bracketing to get an 8-stops of exposure variance. Be sure to bracket by shutter speed rather than by aperture for HDR images. To get quick access to Mirror Lockup function (Custom Function III-13), just add it to My Menu. If you’re like me, I most often manually select a single AF point for focusing. I’ve found the fastest method is to press the AF-point selection/Enlarge button, and then tilt the Multi-controller to select the AF point. This method is easier than using the Quick Control and Main dials to move side to side and up and down. For lens calibration using Custom Function III-5, the LensAlign Focus Calibration system from Michael Tapes makes the calibration process precise and repeatable. When the 7D is combined with the new Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro USM lens, the results are exceptional sharpness especially at f/2.8 through f/11. The addition of Image Stabilization gives you approximately 1 stop of additional stability at close focusing distances and approximately 4 stops at longer distances.

Photo courtesy of Charlotte Lowrie The Canon 7D and the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro USM lens is a winning combination with superb sharpness and snappy contrast. For this shot, I used a white seamless background with two Photogenic studio strobes lighting the background, one strobe provided some backlighting for the outside rose petals, one strobe was placed in front of the rose, and a large silver reflector to the right filled shadows. The slight backlighting effect provides a halo of light petals around the darker center area of the rose. To maintain good detail through the bloom, I used a narrow f/22 aperture. Exposure: f/22, 1/125 sec., ISO 100, Manual shooting mode with Evaluative metering.

Photo courtesy of Charlotte Lowrie With the integrated flash transmitter, it is easy to control and fire multiple Speedlites using the 7D’s built-in flash and the Flash Control menu. For this image, I used a Canon 580EXII and a 580EX Speedlite. The 580EX lit a white poster board background and the 580EXII lit the apple and the water. Both flash units were set up as slaves and fired in TTL mode at full power. I had the 7D set to Manual shooting mode with a bit of overexposure to brighten the background and water. The trick is to catch the apple at a mid point in the water while showing its bubbly path through the water. I learned to drop the apple, wait a split second, and then fire the shutter. I used High Speed Continuous drive mode, but with an approximately 3-second flash recycle time, the only usable picture in a burst was the first image when the flashes fired at full power. For images like this, keys include: having a lot of patience, shooting many images, using a sparkling, scratch-free container, keeping the container full of water, and having a good supply of towels to mop up water. I was happy to learn that Canon’s Speedlites are apparently impervious to water splashes. Exposure: f/2.8, 1/250 sec., ISO 200 with Highlight Tone Priority enabled, using the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens with Evaluative metering.

Since part of my business is pet portraits, I appreciate the quick response of the 7D and the fast and accurate autofocus performance since pets seldom stay still for very long. For this shot of a 10-month-old white miniature Schnauzer, I used the new EF 100mm, f/2.8L IS Macro USM lens. This was a one-light portrait with a Photogenic strobe placed above the puppy and a large silver reflector to camera right. Exposure: f/2, 1/125 sec., ISO 200 with Highlight Tone Priority enabled, using the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro USM lens.
