Review: Cannon EOS 50D Digital Camera
Except for a few modifications, Canon's new 15.1-megapixel EOS 50D midrange digital SLR looks exactly the same as the 10.1-megapixel EOS 40D: The improvements are on the inside. The changes begin with a new CMOS APS-C size sensor that's been improved by employing redesigned sensor photo sites and placing gapless microlenses above them to handle the increased pixel density and resulting noise. The Cannon EOS 50D features an improved ISO range from 100 to 3200, plus H1 and H2 settings of 6400 and 12, 800, respectively. To maintain processing speeds with the additional data from 15-megapixel files, Canon built a new DIGIC 4 image processor into the EOS 50D. The DIGIC 4 allows for 14-bit, analog-to-digital RAW processing, and continuous shooting speeds of up to 6.3 frames per second. The 3", 920, 000-dot LCD is coated to minimize glare and scratches. Throw in an HDMI port for displaying images on high-definition TVs, and this makes the Cannon Eos 50D a very enticing camera.
The EOS 50D performs beautifully. It runs smoothly and quickly, from powering on to writing 15-megapixel files to the new high-speed UDMA CompactFlash cards. RAW files can now be recorded at resolutions of 3.8, 7.1, or 15 megapixels for maximizing resources. How's the image quality on the Cannon EOS 50D with 50% more pixels crammed onto the sensor? I made several 17x22" prints with impressive quality and detail from files up to ISO 3200. The EOS 50D is ruggedly built with a magnesium alloy body; weatherized, rubber-sealed compartment doors; and a comfortable, textured, rubberized grip with an indentation that allows for a well-balanced and firm hold. Control buttons and dials are well designed on the Cannon Eos 50D for quick access to often-used features. This eases the learning curve and minimizes fumbling in the field when changing settings. Pressing the jog dial on the Cannon EOS 50D now brings up a new Quick Control Screen on the LCD, with frequently used features such as ISO, white balance, metering, etc., that are then easily selected and adjusted. When you want to quickly access a set of features, the EOS 50D has two user settings on the mode dial that let you program a compilation of features from the menus as a preset for a defined shooting situation. It's extremely useful. In addition, there's a new function button on the Cannon EOS 50D that can be programmed for quick access to a feature. The mode dial on the EOS 50D has a new simplified exposure option for beginners called Creative Auto mode (CA), which uses onscreen sliders to adjust the aperture and exposure compensation. Live View on the EOS 50D is improved and now has a dedicated button, contrast detection, autofocus, face detection, and a grid overlay. The addition of the higher-resolution LCD improves shooting in bright outdoor light, and I could effectively use Live View off angle with arms extended overhead to capture images that I would have missed if using the optical viewfinder. The logical next iteration of Live View would add an articulated LCD for maximum flexibility. I found Cannon EOS 50D was a trade off between softening an image and losing detail or increasing the noise. At lower ISOs, there's a slight but definite quality improvement over the 40D. The bottom line is that more pixels isn't always a virtue. I like the Cannon Eos 50D but if you own a 40D, I don't think the difference is so incredible that you need to upgrade. What's the best affordable digital SLR camera?
I would be using the camera mainly for pictures of my completed remodel jobs. Sometimes is low or bad light, and usually in confined areas. I know the lens has alot to help with that. With any high magnification binoculars, most users will experience frustrating image shake. Unless fixed to a tripod, image shake can render high magnification binoculars useless. Canon's IS technology is remarkably effective at eliminating this problem and is widely used by the television industry with Canon's professional broadcast quality video recording equipment. A special VAP (Vari-Angle Prism) corrective IS system sits between the objective lens group and the porro prism on each side of the binoculars. Within thousandths of a second of the binoculars being moved from their optical axis by vibrations, a detection system activates the IS mechanism. The VAP shape alters to refract or 'bend' the light path by precisely the right amount, thus fully compensating for the vibration. It is this essentially immediate response that effectively suppresses image shake.
Super Spectra Coating
A number of optical factors affect the brightness of an image, including the amount of incidental light that is reflected by the lens. An uncoated lens will refelect away as much as 8% of the incidentail light, significantly dimming the image. Canon's Super Spectra Coating prevents that reflection.
What do the numbers mean?
15x50? 8x25? The two numbers used to describe any pair of binoculars are their magnification — 8x, 12x, 15x and so on — and the diameter of their objective lenses — 25mm, 36mm, 50mm, and so on. The larger the first number is, the larger the object will appear to be in the objective lens. For instance, if you use a 10x lens and look at an object that is 100 yards away, it appears to be the same size as an object located just 10 yards away. The second number, the size of the objective lens, is important because the larger the objective lens, the more light it can admit for brighter, more detailed images, and the better suited they will be for lowlight situations.

Every once in awhile, a new camera comes out that genuinely fits the needs of beginning photographers who are looking for a step up from a point-and-shoot camera, and who are looking for affordability and excellent image quality. The EOS T3/1100D makes the transition to a digital SLR virtually painless with the simplified layout of controls on the back and top of the camera. | These days, almost all cameras have an Exposure Compensation control, which simply lets you make a relative exposure change. That is, you can tell the camera, "I don't care how you metered the scene; I just want you to go up from there by one stop." Try using exposure compensation now: 1. Frame a shot. 2. Press the shutter button down halfway to meter your scene (the camera will also autofocus and take a white balance reading). 3. After the camera beeps, the viewfinder and status LCD will show you the shutter speed and aperture settings that it has calculated. 4. Take the shot. 5. Now frame the same shot, and again press the shutter button halfway down to meter the scene. 6. Using your thumb, press the Exposure Compensation button on the back of the camera. Dial in a specific amount of over- or underexposure. |

| Food For Thought: What's Wrong With Over- or Underexposing? Of course, once you start tinkering with the camera's carefully concocted exposure settings, you run the risk of over- or underexposing your scene to the point where bright things blow out to complete white or where dark shadows fall to complete black. When an area in your image goes to all white or all black, it becomes an area with no detail. Detail in a photo is constructed from contrasting tones, and when part of an image is one color, it looks like a flat surface. In the case of shadows, this isn't so bad. A black shadow simply looks like an area that's too dark to see. Unless there's some detail in the shadowy area that you really want to keep visible, letting a shadow darken is not too terrible. Overexposed highlights, though, are almost always distracting. An area of complete white acts like a magnet for the viewer's eye and can sometimes upstage your subject. However, at times it's worth overexposing a highlight to get better tonality on your subject. Also, a little bit of overexposed bright spotsâsmall bits of chrome on a car, for exampleâwon't necessarily be noticeable. While there are no hard and fast rules about how much over- or underexposure is too much (and many times, overexposing an image can be an effective stylistic choice), it's important to understand the risk and make an intelligent decision. Now go into playback mode and look at the two images. The second one should be much brighter than the first one. This is the image that was over exposed. Note that you didn't tell the camera a specific shutter speed or aperture. Instead, you simply told it to go up one stop from whatever it thought was the correct exposure. The T1i has an exposure compensation range of -2 stops to +2 stops. By default, the control moves in 1/3-stop increments. When you use exposure compensation, you don't actually know exactly how the camera will achieve its over- or underexposure, but the camera does follow a predictable method. It will always try to achieve its change in a way that doesn't involve a shutter speed that might be too slow for handheld use. Remember, a slower shutter speed means that the shutter is open longer, which means that your images are more susceptible to the blurring and softening caused by shakiness in your hand. If you have the ISO set to Auto, the T1i will often effect the change by altering the ISO setting, but it will never do this to the point of introducing noise into your image. Because there's no visible difference between ISO 100 and 400, the T1i has two stops of ISO latitude to play with, meaning it will often keep the shutter speed and aperture the same as you change exposure compensation. |

With any high magnification binoculars, most users will experience frustrating image shake. Unless fixed to a tripod, image shake can render high magnification binoculars useless. Canon's IS technology is remarkably effective at eliminating this problem and is widely used by the television industry with Canon's professional broadcast quality video recording equipment. A special VAP (Vari-Angle Prism) corrective IS system sits between the objective lens group and the porro prism on each side of the binoculars. Within thousandths of a second of the binoculars being moved from their optical axis by vibrations, a detection system activates the IS mechanism. The VAP shape alters to refract or 'bend' the light path by precisely the right amount, thus fully compensating for the vibration. It is this essentially immediate response that effectively suppresses image shake.
Super Spectra Coating
A number of optical factors affect the brightness of an image, including the amount of incidental light that is reflected by the lens. An uncoated lens will refelect away as much as 8% of the incidentail light, significantly dimming the image. Canon's Super Spectra Coating prevents that reflection.
What do the numbers mean?
15x50? 8x25? The two numbers used to describe any pair of binoculars are their magnification — 8x, 12x, 15x and so on — and the diameter of their objective lenses — 25mm, 36mm, 50mm, and so on. The larger the first number is, the larger the object will appear to be in the objective lens. For instance, if you use a 10x lens and look at an object that is 100 yards away, it appears to be the same size as an object located just 10 yards away. The second number, the size of the objective lens, is important because the larger the objective lens, the more light it can admit for brighter, more detailed images, and the better suited they will be for lowlight situations.

Celestron 52250 80mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope
Celestron’s popular Ultima 80mm Zoom Spotting Scope offers images that are noticeably brighter and sharper than entry level 60mm spotters. The Ultima 80 is a refractor style spotting scope with an Achromatic objective lens. Excellent light transmission is assured by multi-layer anti-reflection coatings on the objective lens as well as on the zoom eyepiece and the BAK-4 prisms. The multi-coated 80mm objective lens delivers 77% brighter views than a 60mm scope, and the built in zoom lens produces sharp images from 20X all the way up to 60X magnification.
The Ultima 80 features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. Including the eyepiece the Ultima 80 measures just over 18 inches long and weighs about 3.6 pounds. The rubber eyecup can be removed to expose a standard “T-thread” for attaching a camera. I like the 45* angled eyepiece because I can use a shorter tripod to support the spotting scope while viewing or while taking pictures with a small camera attached to the eyepiece.
The focus ranges from 27 feet to the horizon with just a few turns of the focus knob. When I fold down the rubber eye cup I can keep my glasses on and see the whole 2 degree field of view at 20X magnification. With my glasses on I need very little focus adjustment while I crank the zoom eyepiece from 20X up to 60X. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Ultima 80 gives me a sharp image either way.
The drawback of the tradition crown and flint achromatic lens used in the Ultima 80 Zoom Spotting Scope is a bit of false color, also known as blue fringing or chromatic aberration. Blue fringing seems well controlled at 20X magnification, but it becomes increasingly noticeable as I zoom up to 60X. Celestron also offers the Ultima 80ED and the Regal 80 F-ED spotting scopes which use exotic ED glass lenses to virtually eliminate blue fringing and produce the sharpest possible high power views.
